the tongue.
It's so interesting how God reminds/teaches me about the human tongue. I'm thankful that it was brought up superficially while I was chatting with JM about the #hashtag video (featuring JFallon and JTimberlake). At the end of that video, someone swears and I brought it up to him (JM) that well, the person swears. He then asks me the question "do you ever swear?" I look at the question and without hesitation I typed nope but before hitting enter, I deleted the "nope". I would like to say I don't swear; in fact, I've only swore once out loud when my clarinet case fell on the floor in school back in grade 7. I remember that incident vividly because I was so surprised that I said such a word. Haha, my classmate was beside me too but I don't think she heard it...but that's not the point of the story hahaha. Point is, even if I haven't said it since, I admit that I think it sometimes and/or substitute words, especially since I'm exposed to such an environment (i.e. work). I even feel that the words we say (e.g. crap, what the hell, what the heck, snap, etc.) are substitutes of swearing. Well, it depends on your intention on saying it...like if you're saying those words because you don't want to specifically use swear words..but to me, it's as if you're swearing. And as I've explained to JM, it's not good because it is sin.
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." - Ephesians 4:29
It is not good that praise comes out of our mouths to God and yet curse with our mouths as well.
"The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" - Luke 6:45
So this conversation reminded me that I have to be careful with what I say. And then today during CCF, JC encouraged us before splitting up into groups to share and pray. He shared James 3:9-12 with us. Coincidence? I think not! Hahha, what I learned is to yes, be careful with what I say. Specifically, is what I am saying pleasing and honouring to God? If not, don't say it. Mm, hehehe, this is what I shall aim for:
"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue" - Proverbs 31:26
Haha, yes, God is good :)
